We had a great day this week visiting three Clore learning spaces with the @RIBA learning team to get ideas for the new RIBA Clore Studio at Portland Place. Our project Barn-ish Brighton-ish has been shortlisted for an AJ retrofit award for houses under £250,000. Constructed within the confines of the existing buildings shell, the design provides new single and double- height spaces in this long, thin plan building. The new spaces are opened up and sculpted around the existing structure to enable the new elements to be clearly read against the historic fabric.

Whole House has been shortlisted in the residential project category at the Blueprint awards 2017. Whole House is a house full of contradictions: a house with large ideas on a small garage site. A house with no windows that is flooded with light. A unique house for a speculative developer client.

Last night Nick chaired the @ribalondon Great British Buildings talk on Education at 66 Portland Place. The panel included Pia Berg, Associate at Penoyre & Prasad who discussed New Studios at Wimbledon College of Arts, Jolyon Brewis, Partner at Grimshaw who discussed The Laboratory at Dulwich College and Tom Noonan, Associate at Hawkins/Brown who discussed The Bartlett School of Architecture. The new space features a double height activity zone with irregular, CNC-cut, laminated ply portals to define the space. The portals include openings that facilitate activities to take place to enhance practical teaching such as pulleys to be hung and fabric to be suspended.

The space also includes fold down demonstration desks, floor projection equipment and a mezzanine to enable students to undertake practical physics experiments. The project also features a south-facing cultivation and growing terrace.

Our proposal for the Alder Centre at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, was shortlisted along with four other practices. The building would provide a new home for counselling and support services for anyone affected by the death of a child, as well as housing the national Freephone Child Death Helpline. Back in March we took the chance to visit the first built project in the UK by British architect Peter Salter, Walmer Yard in Notting Hill. The self-guided tour was a great opportunity to see Salter’s iconic drawings brought to life! Edith Neville Primary School // Our new school building for Edith Neville Primary School received approval from LB Camden’s Planning Committee this summer. Forming part of Camden’s ‘Community Investment Programme’, the project comprises a new school and Children’s Centre in a new masterplan for Central Somerstown. Hayhurst and Co. worked closely with masterplanners (DSDHA) and Duggan Morris, dRMM and Adam Khan Architects who were working on other buildings in the masterplan. Pegasus Academy – Phase 2// The remodelling and expansion of Pegasus Academy builds on the character of the existing Victorian school buildings. Our design brings together a fragmented site with a series of interventions and extensions that thread new teaching spaces through a complex fabric of existing buildings. The new faces brings the two schools together by adopting the pitches and massing of the Victorian buildings at each end. Pegasus Academy – Phase 2// The remodelling and expansion of Pegasus Academy builds on the character of the existing Victorian school buildings. Our design brings together a fragmented site with a series of interventions and extensions that thread new teaching spaces through a complex fabric of existing buildings. The new faces brings the two schools together by adopting the pitches and massing of the Victorian buildings at each end.
