Whitaker Malem will be exhibiting old and new works including Keir’s air plants! Portfolio: Our competition entry for Langley Vale Visitor Hub. Within its ancient, down-land setting, the proposal provides a new visitor’s hub as part of a ‘convivial landscape’ that provides activity spaces for the local community, enthusiasts and children to share and enjoy. The building is organised as three distinct elements each forming a specific function: the hall, the entrance and the support spaces. Pegasus Academy: The first phase of Pegasus Academy involved the construction of a new Nursery classroom, reception classroom and the refurbishment of two existing classrooms which were connected via a new ‘Reception Street’ – a space which connects all the teaching bases providing spill-out spaces for role-play, reading corners, art spaces, home corners etc! All of the spaces open up to a new external play area where the stripy green carpets extend outside in stripy green rubbercrumb to give the sense of a freshly-mown lawn running inside to out. The End of the Year Pier Show: The University of Brighton’s School of Architecture and Design will be holding its annual graduate show on Hastings Pier! A highlight of our recent office trip to Cambridge was the recently listed the Judge business school. Formed of three distinct elements; the Ark, the Castle and the Gallery as described by the architect John Outram. Whole House: Following the article on Whole House in yesterday’s Evening Standard Home & Property this drawing shows the circulation strategy for the house. The circulation and day-lighting strategies were developed together to create a long, light and delightful picturesque promenade: a device to provide views to the sky, surrounding roofs and tree-tops. Walking around the central courtyard provides views in each direction and an abstract visual connection to the site’s environs. As the stair wraps from bottom to top the scale of the stair varies to provide a faster pace, a slower pace, a wider stair or a narrower stair that reflect the level of implied privacy and openness. @bramfieldstudio #wholehouse #hayhurstandco @evening.standard

Portfolio: Hairy House, named because of the wildflower turf roof, is an extension to a Victorian end of terrace house. A mere 10 square metres larger than the previous footprint of a dilapidated lean-to, the extension provides a new family kitchen, dining and play space. The simplicity of the brief was accompanied by a desire to use the opportunities afforded by the angled and tapering geometry of the site to create a unique architectural response. Hairy House won a RIBA National Award and a RIBA London Small Project Award in 2012.

Recently completed: Acorns Nursery at Netley Primary School, is a single-storey nursery building for 20, 2-year-olds. The site sits between a bold new school building completed in 2014 and a triple-decker, Victorian Board School – the ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ of the site. Acorns is conceived as the cheeky little ‘Jack’: a single-storey building that mimics its larger neighbours with its flush pointed red-brick, diamond-shaped mirror tiles externally and acoustic shaped tiles internally. The frog-eye window scoops light into the depth of the plan behind the shadow of the neighbouring buildings and helps provide views out from within.

Burnt House: Set amongst the mature rear gardens of the Maida Vale Conservation Area, this small rear extension transforms a basement flat into a light-filled family home that opens out onto its rear garden.

Charred larch external timber cladding and white oil finishes provide a contrasting series of linings to the extension and increases the reflection of natural light within the home. The use of timber in this way is seen as a sustainable finish that unobtrusively sets the new extension within its landscape and provides a contemporary reference to the traditional conservatory.

Set amongst the mature rear gardens of the conservation area, the concept of the design was to create an timber clad outdoor room that blends with the rich sylvan character of the garden and softens the threshold between the character of the garden and the character of the house.

‘For a small modern house, this building actually contains a lot of big historical references. From the architecture of Roman villas, medieval cloisters, even the Georgian townhouse. Whole House has been shortlisted in the residential project category at the Blueprint awards 2017. Whole House is a house full of contradictions: a house with large ideas on a small garage site. A house with no windows that is flooded with light. A unique house for a speculative developer client.

Our vibrant and playful scheme generates a space that is flexible, thought-provoking and unique. The inter-active design encourages user participation, placing learning at its heart while subtly honouring Grey Wornum’s vision for 66 Portland Place with etched glass and brass trims. @ribalondon @ribacomps @riba

Our proposals for the remodelling of Torriano Primary School in Kentish Town has just started on site.

The project will create a new STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths) lab over two floors of an existing turret of the Edwardian School building.

The project will create a new STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths) lab over two floors of an existing turret of the Edwardian School building.

The new space features a double height activity zone with irregular, CNC-cut, laminated ply portals to define the space. The portals include openings that facilitate activities to take place to enhance practical teaching such as pulleys to be hung and fabric to be suspended.

The space also includes fold down demonstration desks, floor projection equipment and a mezzanine to enable students to undertake practical physics experiments. The project also features a south-facing cultivation and growing terrace.

Our proposal for the Alder Centre at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, was shortlisted along with four other practices. The building would provide a new home for counselling and support services for anyone affected by the death of a child, as well as housing the national Freephone Child Death Helpline. The new spaces are opened up and sculpted around the existing structure to enable the new elements to be clearly read against the historic fabric.
