Work in progress: We are currently developing detailed designs for a new family home in Haringey, London that draws on the green, heavily-wooded backland character of the site. The new home incorporates a double height living space and a planted front elevation – a contemporary re-interpretation of the Victorian greenhouses that once filled the neighbouring plot. The home will be constructed using sustainable and recyclable materials and includes renewable energy sources. Housing Portfolio: Forming part of Camden Council’s regeneration scheme of Central Somers Town, we designed three, four-storey, town-houses that ended a Grade-II listed Georgian terrace. Our design included a rigorous analysis of the elevational features and proportions of the adjacent existing terrace in order to inform how a new end of terrace could be interpreted. Portfolio: In 2015, we gained planning consent and Listed Building consent for a Category B-listed conversion of a farmstead in Burwick on South Ronaldsey on the Orkney Islands. The project included for a new restaurant in the barn, tweed-weaving on the bothy, a gin distillery in piggery and a home for the new owners. The scheme looks to bring an un-used building back to life: the project comprises the creation of 7 new classrooms, 2 halls and an intensive landscape for children aged 3-6. Completed Autumn 2018: The external terrace of the STEM Activity Lab. The fully-opening, bespoke-designed, Oak-framed door includes an internal Cactus planter. Externally, planting troughs are maintained by the pupils (and staff!) and the mirror polished stainless steel shingles ricochet the sunlight and reflect the sky. 2019 Projects: Starting on site in March this year is our remodelling and extension of a 1980s, H-plan, pattern-book bungalow. Set high up on a ridge in Cromer, north Norfolk, the existing house fails to capture the sea views to the north or open up to the woods to the south. 2019 Projects: This week we will sharing some of the images from our 2019 work in progress – projects that will be completing this year as well as projects in development. First up is our 2017 competition-winning scheme for the Clore Learning Centre at the RIBA’s 66 Portland Place. Currently on site, the scheme includes for bespoke cabinetry that provides spaces for the display of artefacts and work produced at the centre with retractable doors along with storage drawers and stools underneath. East Dulwich Grove Estate TRA Hall: Completed in 2011, our £50k refurbishment of an old laundry room provided a new sense of openness within the constraints of the existing building. We installed bespoke timber doors in the existing openings, designed new timber benches and extended the use of the terracotta tiles outside to create a new accessible ramp. Completed Project: Hot of the press… Hayhurst and Co. have just completed a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering, Art and Maths) activity lab at Torriano Primary School in Kentish Town for Camden Council. Following the inclusion of Hayes Primary School in “100 Projects, UK CLT”, this diagram shows how the engineered, cross-laminated timber system is also used to form a central storage wall that runs through the new school. “100 Projects, UK CLT” is a collection of 100 case studies of buildings in the UK constructed from cross-laminated timber and glue-lam. Hayhurst and Co. is looking for architectural assistants/ recently-qualified architects to join our Spitalfields-based studio.
We work on a range of building types and are interested in design that explores landscape and materiality, and nature and domesticity. We work at every scale; from the design of a window seat to the master-plan for part of a city.
We are looking for new staff to work on residential projects – both one-off private homes and multi-unit residential schemes in London and the south-east.
If you are an experienced part-1 (12 months+ experience), part 2 or recently-qualified architect, know our work and are interested in our approach to architecture, we would like to hear from you.
The key requirements for the candidates are;
Must have a rigorous and critical approach to design.
Must be committed to a bespoke architectural attitude.
Must be construction-savvy and love detail.
Must have experience of UK architectural practice.
Must be well-organised and be able to take initiative.
Must be able to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
Must have excellent visual and graphic presentation skills.
Must be a clear and articulate communicator (spoken and written).
Experience of Vectorworks, Revit, skills preferred.
