Talk: Nick will be talking as part of the @nlalondon Breakfast Talk ‘Reimagining Central Somers Town’ tomorrow morning at 8.30am. In this talk, LB Camden, @dsdha_architecture and the four collaborating practices; @adamkhanarch @hayhurstandco @drmmarchitects and @moco_arch will present and discuss their dynamic approach to masterplanning/designing a new urban framework, using landscape and public realm as the primary drivers. Housing Portfolio: Forming part of Camden Council’s regeneration scheme of Central Somers Town, we designed three, four-storey, town-houses that ended a Grade-II listed Georgian terrace. Our design included a rigorous analysis of the elevational features and proportions of the adjacent existing terrace in order to inform how a new end of terrace could be interpreted. From the archive: Must be a nice day to be in the Reception stage play area at Hayes Primary School in Croydon today. Completed in 2012, the project includes a blackboard wall, a sitting niche, sandpit and shallow paddling pool in a space that runs directly from the internal teaching spaces. Portfolio: In 2015, we gained planning consent and Listed Building consent for a Category B-listed conversion of a farmstead in Burwick on South Ronaldsey on the Orkney Islands. The project included for a new restaurant in the barn, tweed-weaving on the bothy, a gin distillery in piggery and a home for the new owners. Following the inclusion of Hayes Primary School in “100 Projects, UK CLT”, this diagram shows how the engineered, cross-laminated timber system is also used to form a central storage wall that runs through the new school. “100 Projects, UK CLT” is a collection of 100 case studies of buildings in the UK constructed from cross-laminated timber and glue-lam. Hayhurst and Co. is looking for architectural assistants/ recently-qualified architects to join our Spitalfields-based studio.

We work on a range of building types and are interested in design that explores landscape and materiality, and nature and domesticity. We work at every scale; from the design of a window seat to the master-plan for part of a city.
We are looking for new staff to work on residential projects – both one-off private homes and multi-unit residential schemes in London and the south-east.
If you are an experienced part-1 (12 months+ experience), part 2 or recently-qualified architect, know our work and are interested in our approach to architecture, we would like to hear from you.
The key requirements for the candidates are;
Must have a rigorous and critical approach to design.
Must be committed to a bespoke architectural attitude.
Must be construction-savvy and love detail.
Must have experience of UK architectural practice.
Must be well-organised and be able to take initiative.
Must be able to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
Must have excellent visual and graphic presentation skills.
Must be a clear and articulate communicator (spoken and written).
Experience of Vectorworks, Revit, skills preferred.

Pegasus Academy: The first phase of Pegasus Academy involved the construction of a new Nursery classroom, reception classroom and the refurbishment of two existing classrooms which were connected via a new ‘Reception Street’ – a space which connects all the teaching bases providing spill-out spaces for role-play, reading corners, art spaces, home corners etc! All of the spaces open up to a new external play area where the stripy green carpets extend outside in stripy green rubbercrumb to give the sense of a freshly-mown lawn running inside to out. Barn-ish, Brighton-ish: An internal refurbishment of a Grade-II listed Coach House in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. Constructed within the confines of the existing buildings shell, the design provides new single and double-height spaces in this long, thin plan building. Whole House: Following the article on Whole House in yesterday’s Evening Standard Home & Property this drawing shows the circulation strategy for the house. The circulation and day-lighting strategies were developed together to create a long, light and delightful picturesque promenade: a device to provide views to the sky, surrounding roofs and tree-tops. Walking around the central courtyard provides views in each direction and an abstract visual connection to the site’s environs. As the stair wraps from bottom to top the scale of the stair varies to provide a faster pace, a slower pace, a wider stair or a narrower stair that reflect the level of implied privacy and openness. @bramfieldstudio #wholehouse #hayhurstandco @evening.standard

Portfolio: Hairy House, named because of the wildflower turf roof, is an extension to a Victorian end of terrace house. A mere 10 square metres larger than the previous footprint of a dilapidated lean-to, the extension provides a new family kitchen, dining and play space. The simplicity of the brief was accompanied by a desire to use the opportunities afforded by the angled and tapering geometry of the site to create a unique architectural response. Hairy House won a RIBA National Award and a RIBA London Small Project Award in 2012.

Recently completed: Acorns Nursery at Netley Primary School, is a single-storey nursery building for 20, 2-year-olds. The site sits between a bold new school building completed in 2014 and a triple-decker, Victorian Board School – the ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ of the site. Acorns is conceived as the cheeky little ‘Jack’: a single-storey building that mimics its larger neighbours with its flush pointed red-brick, diamond-shaped mirror tiles externally and acoustic shaped tiles internally. The frog-eye window scoops light into the depth of the plan behind the shadow of the neighbouring buildings and helps provide views out from within.

Recently completed: Acorns Nursery at Netley Primary School, is a single-storey nursery building for 20, 2-year-olds. The site sits between a bold new school building completed in 2014 and a triple-decker, Victorian Board School – the ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ of the site. Acorns is conceived as the cheeky little ‘Jack’: a single-storey building that mimics its larger neighbours with its flush pointed red-brick, diamond-shaped mirror tiles externally and acoustic shaped tiles internally. The frog-eye window scoops light into the depth of the plan behind the shadow of the neighbouring buildings and helps provide views out from within. hayhurstandco #netleyprimaryschool #acornsnursery #euston #nursery #jack

Burnt House: Set amongst the mature rear gardens of the Maida Vale Conservation Area, this small rear extension transforms a basement flat into a light-filled family home that opens out onto its rear garden.

Charred larch external timber cladding and white oil finishes provide a contrasting series of linings to the extension and increases the reflection of natural light within the home. The use of timber in this way is seen as a sustainable finish that unobtrusively sets the new extension within its landscape and provides a contemporary reference to the traditional conservatory.

The boundary comprises a white, profiled and perforated mesh between steel posts which open up to provide framed view of the new school building and planting in the school’s outside spaces beyond. The project forms part of Camden’s ‘Community Investment Programme’: a new school and Children’s Centre in a new masterplan for Central Somerstown.
