Planning consent has been granted for the construction of three new, four-storey, three-bedroomed, town-houses to complete a Grade-II listed Georgian terrace in Central Somers Town.
Located on the same footprint as houses demolished in the early 1970s to make way for a new school, the design provides new family-sized homes whilst responding to the role of completing the listed terrace.
The design is developed from a study of the architectural character and elevational composition of the original three-piece terrace built in the mid nineteenth century. The study analysed the original terrace unit pattern, window detailing, door handing and corner treatments.
The analysis led to the strategy for a new contemporary-styled corner development of three new homes for London Borough of Camden. A design that ends the terrace, provides privacy to a new school and addresses the new housing and landscape strategies deployed in the central Somers Town masterplan.
The footprint of the new homes match the width, depth and height of the previous houses however internally are planned to provide to provide light double aspect spaces accessed via a scissor stair arrangement so as reduce the need for circulation on each floor plate.
The profile of the butterfly roofs of the existing terrace are reflected in the softly-angled plan and undulating parapet line at the rear of the upper floors in order to provide a sense of visual continuity with the language of the rear of the terraces that can be seen across the new park.
