Back Door House is a remodelled house in the St Mary Magdalene Conservation Area in London Borough of Islington. The works converted what were previously two separate dwellings by reconnecting a lower-ground floor flat back into the body of the original Victorian property.
The designs transformed the living accommodation to the home and create a more intuitive connection to the garden for a young family.
The designs for the conversion of the property rotate around a new back door, that forms the visual and the physical connection to the back garden. The door located across lower and upper ground floors has multiple panes, that open to allow differing sized openings, views and circulation to the back of the house.
The adaptability the new door provides allows the internal spaces to be transformed according to the seasons and to provide a greater sense of connection to the garden from the living spaces above ground level.
